A Conversation with Matthew Spalding and Jordan Ballor

In this edition of the Reading Wheel Review, Dr. Jordan Ballor, executive director of First Liberty’s Center for Religion, Culture, and Democracy, interviews Dr. Matthew Spalding, the Kirby Professor in Constitutional Government and the Dean of the Van Andel Graduate School of Government at Hillsdale College’s Washington, D.C., campus. Their discussion focuses on Dr. Spalding’s book, The Making of the American Mind: The Story of Our Declaration of Independence. Their conversation examines the formation, argument, and significance of that revolutionary text from 1776 whose 250th anniversary we celebrate this year.

Physical books are at once a conduit for conveying complex and well-developed ideas and an artifact of the time and place from which they come. Each month the Reading Wheel Review (RWR) will select one book to engage and then each week we will publish a different engagement with that text, typically a review, an excerpt, a substantively related essay, or an interview with the author or a figure who works in the field represented by the book we’ve selected. We look forward to sustained engagement with a variety of books, both new and old, as we launch and grow the RWR. Sign up to keep connected.
