Hans-Martien ten Napel, PhD

SENIOR FELLOW

Hans-Martien ten Napel is a senior fellow at the Center for Religion, Culture & Democracy and an associate professor of constitutional and administrative law at Leiden University in the Netherlands. Throughout his career, he has focused on constitutional law, political legitimacy, political rights, and religious freedom. He has held fellowships at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard University and the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton, New Jersey. He is the editor or coeditor of numerous volumes, including Culture, Secularization, and Democracy: Lessons from Alexis de Tocqueville, and the author of Constitutionalism, Democracy, and Religious Freedom: To Be Fully Human. In 2024, he delivered the Center for Public Justice’s twenty-seventh annual Kuyper Lecture at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
